Projects TANZIE

Tanzania Internationalisation Strategies for Higher Education (TANZIE)

Project Overview

The TANZIE project addresses Tanzania's internationalization needs by promoting sustainable job creation, crisis resilience, and global cooperation. It supports the establishment of international relations offices and enhances management skills at partner universities.

Through knowledge transfer, capacity-building training, and targeted sustainability actions, the project aims to deliver impactful, publishable results. Activities are tailored to the actual needs of Tanzanian HEIs, drawing from prior experience to ensure a structured path toward internationalization.

Muslim University of Morogoro (MUM) is a young and vibrant private university in Tanzania. It aims to be a higher education center of excellence with cutting-edge programs, responsive to the needs of the individual and the nation in a globalized world, guided by Islamic moral values.

To contribute to national efforts, MUM focuses on producing highly educated and well-trained human resources, instilled with appropriate aptitudes and attitudes for the material, moral, and spiritual development of society. The university upholds the highest standards of teaching, learning, research, outreach, and consultancy in providing holistic and well-integrated education and training.

Aligned with the TANZIE Project's mission, MUM strives to enhance its institutional capacity to plan, implement, and evaluate internationalization strategies. This includes establishing dedicated internationalization offices, fostering intercultural competencies among faculty, administrative staff, and students, and supporting the development of a globalized academic environment.

Additionally, MUM is committed to developing tailored strategies that address current challenges and needs, such as the lack of clear policies and guidelines, inefficiencies in managing internationalization, and financial, infrastructure, and equipment constraints.

A major step in this direction is the TANZIE Project (Tanzania – Internationalization Strategies for Higher Education), a collaborative initiative that brings together eight institutions from Tanzania and Europe.

Project Goals and Specific Objectives

TANZIE seeks to strengthen internationalization efforts in Tanzanian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through institutional development and capacity-building, enhancing the overall quality of teaching, research, and international collaboration.

Specific Objectives of TANZIE

  • Enhance institutional capacity to plan, implement, and evaluate internationalization strategies, including the creation of dedicated internationalization offices.
  • Foster intercultural competencies among faculty, administrative staff, and students, supporting the development of a globalised academic environment.
  • Develop tailored strategies that address current challenges and needs of Tanzanian HEIs, such as:
    • Lack of clear policies and guidelines
    • Inefficiencies in managing internationalization
    • Financial, infrastructure, and equipment constraints
    • Gaps in language, and intercultural skills
    • Cultural barriers and brain drain
    • Asymmetrical international partnerships

Through structured training, exchange programmes, and collaborative planning, TANZIE aims to create sustainable international networks, increase mobility opportunities, and position Tanzania as a regional hub for academic excellence and global engagement.

Implementation of TANZIE at MUM

As one of the eight project partners, MUM has been assigned the responsibility of updating the needs assessment component. Currently, MUM is collecting responses from individuals and partner institutions. Once this data collection phase is completed, the information will be refined, cleaned, analyzed, and compiled into a report based on the provided template. We are confident that this work package will be completed on time and within the allocated resources.

The Muslim University of Morogoro (MUM) has successfully established an Internationalization Office, and a coordinator has been appointed to oversee its operations. This marks progress toward fulfilling one of the TANZIE project objectives, which has now been achieved.
